On behalf of the Graduate Faculty in the School of Communication Studies at Bowling Green State University, I wish you greetings. Our faculty are internationally scholars of media, culture, and communication-our mission is to provide the very best in scholarly training, building a faculty for the future. As you pursue our website, don't hesitate to contact the graduate program at comsgrad@bgsu.edu. We will be happy to return your inquiry quickly, helping you decide if your academic future lies with BGSU.

The master's and doctoral degrees in Communication Studies focus on the foundations of communication theory and practice, including areas of emphasis such as culture, mass media studies, public relations, organizational communication, rhetoric, and democracy.

The program's strengths lie in its rigorous commitment to preparing future communication scholars and practitioners with grounding in philosophical foundations, communication theories, multiple research methods, and communication pedagogy and, for master's students, practical experiential learning opportunities.

Some of our master's students go on to doctoral studies here or at other research universities. Others build careers with major businesses and non-profit organizations in Northwest Ohio and beyond. Most of our part-time students are already employed by major regional corporations.

Our doctoral students are active at the national level, presenting research and serving on panels at national and international conventions. They generally find positions at liberal arts colleges and state universities and succeed because they know how to balance the demands on their time. Our students share a common core of courses and then branch out to explore their particular interests.

The courses in the program core include: introduction to communication studies, philosophical foundations of communication theory, pedagogy, social science research methods, humanistic research methods, communication studies colloquium. Other offerings include persuasion, media history and law, new electronic media, content analysis, performance studies, gender studies, rhetorical criticism and theory, health communication, intercultural communication, and international communication.

Doctoral students frequently do cognates in areas such as visual communication technology, sociology, or history.
